Side by side: Canon 500d (T1i) vs. Canon HG20

Interesting to see!

Canon 500d (T1i) vs. Canon HG20 from Chris Anderson on Vimeo.

Just got my Canon 500d (T1i) tonight, had to do a comp against my current video camera.

HG20 running wide open (f/1.8) recording in FX mode (17mps).

500d (T1i) with kit lens 18-55 f/3.5-f/5.6 zoomed in a bit, so probably f/4… recording at 720p.

Editing in Adobe Premiere to do the side by side.

Obviously the f/1.8 HG20 is way brighter, however it seems to be a lot more noisy. I’m wondering if this is just because I can see the noise?

Looking forward to trying a faster lens, and daylight, on the 500d.

Good job on the video, but c’mon, why would you do a comparison of f/3.5 vs. f/1.8. Set your HG20 to f/3.5 (if possible) and enjoy a black screen! Or just get a better lens for your 500d
