Ben has long been regarded as an expert in the photography field and has written many books and reviews.

So what does he say about the Canon Rebel T1i/500D? “But to call the EOS Rebel T1i a low-end camera is fairly crazy.” He goes on to give some good information about Live View, Features, and Movies – you’ll need to read the whole story to find out his summary (it wouldn’t be fair of us to just give away the good bits LOL)

Oh, and don’t forget!!! There are only 11 days left for the Canon USA rebates

“The Canon Digital Rebel T1i (500D) is proving to be an excellent field camera. In my first test, I roamed the streets of San Francisco with a Canon 70-200 mm f/4 L zoom. For my next adventure, I visited Bodie State Park off of Hwy. 395 in Northern California. Since CA may be closing most of its State Parks due to the budget crisis, I wanted to visit Bodie again for what I hope isn’t a last look.”

“LOS ANGELES — Commercial photographer Vincent Laforet just moved to L.A. to embark on a new career as a director of photography on movies.

But he won’t be using a video camera for his efforts. Instead, he plans on shooting everything on a digital SLR (single-lens reflex) camera — the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, which takes both stills and video.”

Please read the whole story and watch their video review of the Canon Rebel T1i/500D in the lower left.

Note: we posted this over on the planet5D blog, but it could apply to the T1i/500D so we thought we’d let you know as well.

Giving a tip of the hat to Monty Python… “And now for something completely different” – a Canon EOS 5D Mark II with a Holga lens! It is an interesting idea to combine one of the best (and largest) sensors on the market with an inexpensive plastic lens, but that’s what makes life interesting right? And so far, I’ve only seen stills… come on guys, what about video?

A company called HolgaMods is now shipping a Holga lens attached to a Canon lens cap for you to attach to your camera. Check their site out!

In the last week, I’ve found two blog posts by folks who’ve ordered this unique lens for the Canon EOS 5D Mark II… Wade Heninger from Seattle has done it and put up a couple of images on his site… here’s one (click the image to go to his post to see all of them):

He comments:

“Yes. A cheap plastic lens from China, complete with outrageous aberrations to stick on my 3K camera body. What was I thinking?
Well, I’ve owned several holgas, and they’ve always given me the wildest results. That is the point, but still, it can be alot of fun to see what comes out of the soup when developing that roll of 120 film. Well, all I’ve done is removed the middleman (i.e. the soup) and went straight to digital. No photoshop necessary. ”

And from Hawaii, Dallas Nagata has posted information on her blog as well:

“The reason it’s so blurry on the edges is because of how the sensor and lens don’t quite match up, but I think it’s kind of awesome. Photoshop-effect without the Photoshop!”

So, will you rush out and get one? If so, let’s see some of your samples over in the planet5D forums!

Lots of news coming out for the Canon Rebel T1i/500D. Here’s a good review/podcast and some still samples from our planet5D friend Derrick Story.

“The Canon Rebel T1i is known for its HD video recording and 15 megapixel CMOS sensor. But this camera contains refinements in nearly every category. I recently published a field report with sample images tited, Street Shooting with Canon 500D/T1i, but I wanted to spend a little more time talking about the specifications and usability of the DSLR. And that’s exactly what I do in this week’s podcast.”

Jump over to Derrick’s post to hear the podcast

He also published a nice article “Street Shooting with Canon 500D/T1i” – give it a read!

“The Canon Digital Rebel T1i (500D) is a nimble DSLR that hangs light on the shoulder and responds quickly when you press the shutter. I mounted a Canon 70-200 mm L f/4 zoom on the 15 megapixel body and hit the pavement in San Francisco’s Nob Hill district to see how the T1i would hold up on the streets.”

“Hi,
I did a video with the 500D this weekend and I think it would be nice on your website. There are not a lot a video right now showing what the new Rebel can do in different lighting condition and with something else than 18-55mm. I believe my video is showcasing what the new Rebel can do!”

Have a tip, a video, or a Canon Rebel T1i/500D product to announce? Give us a shout

Canon Rebel T1i : My First Try from Charles-Etienne Pascal on Vimeo.

I shot this video in 720p30 using only available light and without any stabilizers or tripods. Nothing was staged or planned, just like your uncle would do with this camera. I used a Sigma 10-20mm 4-5.6 and a 30mm 1.4. I color corrected the video, so yes, it is not the original colors (it’s an addiction I have…).

I am planning on shooting a few other videos with the T1i, but this time using a tripod, a Glidecam and a ModoSteady. Stay tuned!

Enjoy!

Edward Platero sends us this wonderful little video that he shot yesterday. It shows a nice mix of video and stills shot with the Canon Rebel T1i/EOS 500D.

Edward gave us this info:
“I shot a video yesterday using just the T1i. We also had a 5DMkII on site but the auto exposure in video mode made us jump to the T1i as it was constantly adjusting exposure. The T1i locked in the exposure and allowed me to shoot with a lot of light.

This is my first real shoot with the T1i, and I can’t express how happy I am with the product. We have a panasonic HVX200 with at Brevis 35mm adapter that doesn’t take video this nice.”

Thanks Edward for sending this in! You too can send in a tip, a video, or a Canon Rebel T1i/500D product to announce? Give us a shout

Product video for Petrov Designs. Shot entirely on Canon T1i. There is no colour correction to this file, it is straight off camera.

Footage was shot at 720p.
Lens Used: Sigma f2.8 28-70mm

I did notice a few things… as with the 5D mk ii, you’ve got to be spot on with the focus. Otherwise, a perfectly good shot is just a bit off. I also don’t know if there’s a problem with blacks like the 5D mk ii had (before a QuickTime update), if you notice the blacks on this snap from the video:

Notice the blacks in the circled areas.

This also could be issues with the compression for the upload to vimeo – I don’t know. Download the full size from vimeo and look for yourself.
