dSLRdad alerted us to a new Canon Rebel T1i/500D review on the Macworld site that has been written by the famous Ben Long. Ben has long been regarded as an expert in the photography field and has written many books and reviews.

So what does he say about the Canon Rebel T1i/500D? “But to call the EOS Rebel T1i a low-end camera is fairly crazy.” He goes on to give some good information about Live View, Features, and Movies – you’ll need to read the whole story to find out his summary (it wouldn’t be fair of us to just give away the good bits LOL)

Oh, and don’t forget!!! There are only 11 days left for the Canon USA rebates

And thanks again to dSLRdad – they’re a good resource and you should visit them often!

Lots of news coming out for the Canon Rebel T1i/500D. Here’s a good review/podcast and some still samples from our planet5D friend Derrick Story.

“The Canon Rebel T1i is known for its HD video recording and 15 megapixel CMOS sensor. But this camera contains refinements in nearly every category. I recently published a field report with sample images tited, Street Shooting with Canon 500D/T1i, but I wanted to spend a little more time talking about the specifications and usability of the DSLR. And that’s exactly what I do in this week’s podcast.”

Jump over to Derrick’s post to hear the podcast

He also published a nice article “Street Shooting with Canon 500D/T1i” – give it a read!

“The Canon Digital Rebel T1i (500D) is a nimble DSLR that hangs light on the shoulder and responds quickly when you press the shutter. I mounted a Canon 70-200 mm L f/4 zoom on the 15 megapixel body and hit the pavement in San Francisco’s Nob Hill district to see how the T1i would hold up on the streets.”

B&H has released a review with a video entitled “Rebel with a 1080p Cause“.

Note that we’ve also added several new reviews to the T1i/500D wiki as well as some new still samples!

“For an entry-level DSLR, the new Rebel has a laundry list of attributes that a year ago would have seemed highly unlikely to be found in a camera selling for well under a thousand dollars… very unlikely. Topping this list is the Rebel T1i’s ability to shoot HD 1080p video, which is an industry first for an APS-C format DSLR. For less-pressing video capture or longer recording times, video can also be captured in 720p. Canon’s recently introduced full-frame EOS 5D Mark II also shoots 1080p video, but it costs a cool $2000 more than the new Rebel.”

“Slipping neatly into the company’s dSLR product line between the XSi and the 40D, the Canon EOS Rebel T1i (aka the 500D elsewhere in the world) pushes the XTi off the edge of the bed into discontinuity. Joined by models like the Nikon D5000 and the Olympus E-620 in that $800-to-$900-with-lens market segment, it’s not quite a budget model; more for the entry-level buyer who wants higher resolution and a better AF system, and perhaps video, than you can get for $700.

In addition to the kit with the veteran f3.5-5.6 18-55mm IS lens, Canon is shipping a body-only version for those of you who already have a lens or two lying around.”

By the way, we added several reviews and still samples on the wiki over the weekend as well

“So, we just know you’re wondering which display we prefer. If we’re being totally candid, we’d take the T1i’s panel in 99 percent of scenarios. As many has recognized, the articulating display just isn’t that useful in the vast majority of situations. It’s cute, it’s intriguing and it’s different, but we just didn’t find ourselves pulling it out all that often. Yeah, you can chalk that up to our distaste of Nikon’s Live View implementation and the fact that we don’t generally use our DSLR as a camcorder, but if you find yourself in that same camp, you too would probably find that Vari-angle monitor sat flush against the body most of the time. ”

ephotozine.tv has a new video review of the Canon Rebel T1i/500D/Kiss X3.

Have a tip, a video, or a Canon Rebel T1i/500D product to announce? Give us a shout

There’s also a text review to accompany the video preview.

The preview hosted on youtube (which I can display here) is a shortened version of the full preview… make sure to visit the ephotozinte.tv site for the full preview.

Interestingly, there’s a new feature shown in the video that I’ve not seen discussed before – and that’s the ability to modify the LCD screen color:

From the text review:
“Noticing the black on white screen I asked Chris Lowe about how people who are partially sighted may have trouble with the colour arrangement and he showed me a menu option in the custom functions that allow you to change the colour of the fonts and background. You can select black on white, white on black, beige on brown and light green on dark green.

This opens up more possibilities as partially sighted photographers can adjust to white on black if it’s easier to see. Night photographers can use the green based option so that after an hour in pitch black, the screen isn’t too bright spoiling your nicely adjusted eyes.”
